Flight over Greenland

Greenland, aerial, glacier

View of the southeast coast of Greenland, in the region around Tingmiarmit and Uvtorsiutit, as seen from a commercial airliner.

The best part of the flight between the States and Germany is the chance to see Greenland out the window halfway through the flight. On our recent flight home (between Frankfurt and Chicago) we passed over the southern tip of Greenland, and were treated to awesome views of its mountains and fjords, with glaciers flowing out from the continental ice sheet. Thailand Getaway

An amazing sunset over the limestone karsts of Railay beach.

Claudia and I are mountain lovers through and through; but after two treks in the Himalaya, the thought of relaxing on some Thai beaches sounded pretty appealing. With two travel weeks to spare in December, and just a 3-hour flight from Kathmandu, we quickly planned a getaway to Thailand!

Needless to say, once we were laying in the sand under the warm sun, we felt like that was a pretty damn good decision. We started in Railay and Ao Nang, near the city of Krabi; then worked our way south towards the Trang province, including stays on the islands of Ko Lanta, Ko Kradan, and Ko Muk.

A Change of Pace

Ko Kradan, Thailand

So. We were in Nepal. We are now in Thailand!

We originally planned to spend two whole months in Nepal doing two long back-to-back treks in the Himalaya. Good plan in theory. Well, after our first 20-day trek through the Everest region, despite how awesome it was we realized that doing another equally long trek was clearly not in the cards. That left us (after our shorter Annapurna trek) with roughly three weeks to spare, and we certainly weren’t going to spend three weeks dodging traffic in Kathmandu. Hmmm… what to do.

How about something completely different? After a day of googling and researching, we had our tickets to Thailand booked!

What a fantastic change of pace it’s been; and so surreal going from mountains and glaciers to beaches and warm waters. We spent a week in the Krabi area, famous for its unique limestone pinnacles towering over white sand beaches and jade bays. We’ve boated south now to the Trang region where the islands are surrounded by calm turquoise water. We have a few more days to melt in the heat here, then the Asian part of our trip is just about over and we head back to Germany to visit family and friends over the holidays.

Stay tuned for a big batch of tropical paradise photos coming in January.

Morning at Bunes Beach on Moskenesøya Island – July.

The treasure hunt continues with these photos I recently unearthed from my hard drive, from the Lofoten Islands in Norway from back in July 2009. Though I often shot with my large format 4×5 film camera here, all these photos were taken with an Olympus E-620 digital SLR. While selecting the photos to publish after this trip, I think I was initially more focussed on the 4×5 photos and/or the more colorful sunrise/sunset shots, which is probably why I overlooked these no-less-worthy daytime photos.

Cimon della Pala is revealed glowing in evening light as low clouds thin out from Passo Rolle.

In the last few months I’ve been steadily working on reorganizing my photo archives in Lightroom, and during the process I’ve unearthed quite a few gems that I had overlooked during the initial selection process. So in the next few days and weeks I’ll be sharing many of these finds.

Cimon della Pala rises over Passo Rolle high above the town of San Martino di Castrozza – December.

This first batch comes from December of 2010 when I spent a week in the small town of San Martino di Castrozza in the Italian Dolomites. Every day I’d drive my rental car up the winding road to Passo Rolle to ski around looking for a variety of photo angles of the immense jagged spire of Cimon della Pala – one of the most striking peaks in a region full of striking peaks.
