Sarajevo is true cultural crossroads, with historical influences from the Byzantine and Ottoman empires to the east and the empires of Rome, Venice, and Vienna to the west. Here you can find churches, mosques, and synagogues all in the same square! The old town has a distinctly Turkish feel to it, with narrow alleys full of small coffee shops, hookah bars, and copper goods; and then within one block the city transforms into a more typical western European city with its taller buildings, fancy store fronts, and extensive outdoor cafes and nightclubs.
