February Powder Days

Are you sick of all the powder shots I keep posting here? I hope not, because here’s a dozen more! With a low workload recently – along with loads of fresh powder in the mountains – I’ve managed to get out on the splitboard/snowboard for 6 of the last 7 days, scoring some of the best turns of the winter so far! LOTS more pow shots below…

The stormy gray skies haven’t been great for photos, but who cares when they bring such lovely powder!

Snowpit

Here I am digging a snow pit to assess the avalanche danger. Although I always read the avalanche forecasts before venturing into the backcountry, digging a snow pit makes it all more clear and real. Right now in the northern San Juans we’ve got a classic “bridging” effect: the lower snowpack is weak sugar-snow crap, with a consolidated fresh upper snowpack resting on top hopefully firm enough to support itself. With conditions like these, if there is an avalanche it will probably be huge and destructive, so we stay away from the big faces and stick to the more manageable lines in the trees and glades.

  1. Yeah Jack! Those are awesome! I was down snorkeling at Wolf Creek over the weekend, conditions were insane! Speaking of avalanche’s, I was trying to get back to Boulder when an avalanche closed Monarch all day on Sunday. Stay safe out there Jack!

    1. Hey Ryan, yeah I saw that Wolf Creek got something like 9+ feet in the last week or so… incredible!!! Meanwhile, Telluride got skunked with only a foot or so. Glad you got to shred it! 🙂
