Timp Dayhike

Hiking Mt. Timpanogos from the Aspen Grove trail

On our way back from the Sawtooths, on Tuesday Claudia and I did a day hike up Mount Timpanogos, the most famous and beloved mountain in the Wasatch Range in Utah. We started from the Aspen Grove trailhead, and our leisurely tour took us 9 hours up and down.

Looking up at Timp – the summit shelter is just barely visible at top right.

Hiking up Mt. Timpanogos, Utah

The views from the ridge are grand, looking out over Utah Lake and the city of Provo. I had to laugh when Claudia’s first reaction upon seeing the view off the west side (shocked to see the big city below) was a sour “Ewww…”

Hiking along the ridge after the summit, looking at the Timp Glacier which we would use as a quick descent route.

Sliding down the Mt. Timpanogos glacier, Utah

The only way down the Timp Glacier is to slide down the steep face on your butt! I takes some nerve to jump down into it, but Claudia did it like a champ.

  1. You have some of the best hiking pictures i have seen on google…when you where hiking up Mount Timpanogos, Utah. You captured some AWESOME PHOTOS. You included pictures from all the highlights of the trip. The path at the start looking up a huge bowl and you see massive rock cliffs up ahead. The picture on the way up of seeing towns in the distance that look like little dots. Then the picture of sliding down the glacier…PERFECT!!!! The reason i know is i have lived in utah 36 years out of my 38 years. I hiked that awesome mountain, very tiring but well worth the effort when you stand on some of the highest peaks…seems you can see the whole state of Utah.
The reason i write so much is i love awesome photography. Have you done other hikes you have pictures of? I would like to see them.

    1. Thanks Dave! Yeah there are a LOT of highlights during the Timp hike! Not included here are watching a herd of mountain goats climbing impossible cliffs, relaxing next to the little lake below the glacier, on and on…

This was the fourth time I’ve hiked Timp. I snowboarded down it once in the spring, which was amazing, but unfortunately no photos from that trip. Last time I watched the sunset from the summit, you can see the photo here: http://www.widerange.org/photo/timpanogos-summit-panorama/

    1. yes Gabriel he did. I also did it. I live in Utah and i hiked Timp one time. Yes you do slide down the glacier. We brought big garabage sacks like in the picture and slid down that beautiful piece of ice. It is no joke people hike Timp and slide down that glacier every year. I am sure Jack Brauer could tell you more he has hiked it many times, I have only hiked it once but it was AWESOME!!!!!

  3. Was actually hiking just north of there a couple weeks ago. Maybe fifteen miles away, love the Uintas, though my pictures don’t do them justice.
