Happy New Year!

New Years in Mayrhofen, Austria

I’m a couple days late, but HAPPY NEW YEAR! The photo above is actually from New Years in Mayrhofen, Austria a couple years ago. This year we had a rockin’ time with friends out on the town here in Ouray. Nice fireworks here too, but I was in no shape to be handling a camera at the time!

Speaking of fireworks, one thing I noticed during my stay in Europe was the different nature of fireworks shows over there. Instead of the big “official” city fireworks shows that we have here in the US, in Europe I think it’s more common (or at least in the smaller cities) that everybody in town shoots off their own “medium” sized fireworks. So while the fireworks there weren’t individually as large, I’ve never seen SO MANY at once! Pretty cool.

Anyhow, I wish you all the best in 2013! I know I’m looking forward to an adventure-filled year!

  1. Happy New Year Jack!

Love your image… Hmm… What’s your normaly workflow look like? Type of software and tools do you use etc to process your shots?
I wish you an adventure-filled year

    Greetings,
    Alex

    1. Happy new year to you too, Alex! I typically shoot RAW, make minor exposure and color balance adjustments in the RAW conversion software before generating TIFs, which I then adjust further in Photoshop. Nothing fake, just mainly contrast and color adjustments.

      1. Thank you 🙂
Okey I see… I love when everything is real and not fake. Thats how I see it.
And thanx for your workflow. I try to keep everything real too. Landscape, nature and wilderness should always be a real capture, I think 🙂

        Greetings

  2. Jack, I appreciate your photography very much, you are very gifted. But I am not one to ever hold back on my freedom of expression. I think fireworks are damaging to the environment, and in Ouray, they frighten the wildlife and their babies in the summer. They are also a fire danger, and to me, a waste of good money –money that can go towards helping the environment, not hurting it or scaring animals. This is why I have always boycotted the fireworks in Ouray/Telluride etc. Peace.

    1. Thanks Alethea. I haven’t really thought of it that way. Still though, it’s hard for me to muster outrage about fireworks. It would be one thing if there were fireworks every night, or every week, but to celebrate with fireworks twice a year doesn’t seem too bad. Especially considering all the real daily threats to wildlife, such as cars/trucks for one example. As for money, my guess is that the draw of the fireworks and other festivities like the water fights bring in far more tourist dollars than they cost, especially on 4th of July here in Ouray. So, yeah, I’m still stoked to see the fireworks! 😉
