Euro Winter!

euro style

On Sunday I’ll be in Europe! On tap: a winter in the Swiss Alps and the Black Forest in southern Germany. See some drool-inducing pics I harvested from the internet, below the fold. Wish me luck, and stay tuned for lots of [hopefully very snowy] blog posts from the Alps!

  1. Good Lord, Jack…I’ve got to be honest and say I’m a little envious. Where will you be staying? Have a blast and keep give us frequent updates AND LOTS of pictures!

    1. I’ll be in Freiburg, in southern Germany, with my g/f for most of November… then the tentative plan is to try to find a place to rent for the winter in either Andermatt or Engelberg (3-4 hours by train from Freiburg). We’ll see… I’m going to check it out in Nov.

  2. Make sure you go to Zermatt, go up the Klein Matterhorn, also hike upto the refuge at the base of the Matterhorn, and last take the train upto the Gornergraut. Have Fun!

    1. Thanks for the tips, Jody! I know you’ve spent many seasons around there. Everybody’s telling me to head to Zermatt. One nice thing about Andermatt is that there’s a 2-hour express train to Zermatt. Exciting…

  3. Hey man, have a great winter, I hope you make it back in one piece so we can do some backpacking next summer.

  4. Have a great trip, I’m envious. I lived in Berlin 2 yrs and visited southern Germany several times (Zugspitz!). And vacationed in Kandersteg, Switzerland for 2 Christmas breaks. Wow! Small village surrounded by mountains with 2 ski areas. My favorite trips from there were to MĂĽrren and on to the tinier town of Gimmelwald and up on the Schilthorn. I think that is the most spectacular part of the Bernese Oberland Alps. Also beautiful around Grindewald with the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau peaks there. And Zermatt and the Matterhorn are just a train ride through the mountain tunnel from Kandersteg. I sure look forward to your photography from there.

  5. Since we don’t need to hope for good snowboarding conditions…cuz they ARE The Alps…then I hope Freiburg brings everything your heart desires. It’s your time, Jack!

  6. Please send exact address with key so I can come couch surf. You’re going to have a blast! I’ll enjoy it through your photos.
