The Original Wetterhorn

The nighttime lights of the town of Grindelwald shine in the fog, while Wetterhorn (3692m) towers above in the moonlight - December.

Last weekend we visited the towns of Grindelwald and Mürren in Switzerland. These towns are situated in the Jungfrau region near Interlaken, at the foot of some of the largest and most rugged mountains in Switzerland.

Above is a photo of Grindelwald, with Wetterhorn towering above in the moonlight. Not to be confused with the American Wetterhorn in Colorado… this is the original!

The town of Mürren is even more spectacular. It’s a car-free town perched on the edge of a sheer cliff high above a valley (requiring a cable-car ride to get to), with the Jungfrau peaks towering another 8,000 vertical feet overhead! Perhaps the most spectacular mountain town I’ve ever seen!

  1. Mürren is definitely a cool place. Spent a week in Gimmelwald a few years back. Nice days wandering around with Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau in the background…

  2. What an idyllic town Grindelwald and Murren are. I can’t imagine having those views everyday! I love all these shots, especially the night shot. I’m guessing that one was taken with the Canon? Glad to see you’re making the most of your time there, Jack. Superb stuff, for sure!

    1. Yep, all of these were taken with the Canon! This one was 6 or 8 seconds @ ISO 1600, blended with a 30 sec @ ISO 1600 of the same comp (for the stars and mountain in the quarter-moon light).

  3. I love all that mist swirling and drifting around and above the town. How did you happen to be up there above the town at that time? Your timing is superb. Is it a happy circumstance you ran across or did you notice something and plan to get up there to photograph?

    1. Thanks David! This shot was preplanned in a sense, but I had been thinking more along the lines of a post-sunset twilight shot for this. Earlier that day I had scouted the area to know of a good place to walk to for this perspective. I ended up being somewhere else (Mürren) for sunset, but that evening as we drove back to Grindelwald I realized that the moon might be in a good position for this kind of shot, which it was. And the fog was just an awesome surprise bonus!

  4. Jack…what an outstanding collection of images. I have lived in Switzerland for a year and half and those were some of the best times in my life. I am glad you are enjoying the time. Great, well seen, pictures of that beautiful country and unlike any other pictures of Switzerland!. Great job as always…

  5. Awesome shot! Spent a summer in Interlaken playing soccer and remember the Jungfrau area being one of the most awesome places ever.
