Schauinsland Sunset

December 20, 2010 | 14 Comments

Yesterday afternoon we drove up to Schauinsland, a mountain in the Black Forest above Freiburg, for a “look into the country” so to speak. We took a small hike through the winter-wonderland forest to the summit, where there’s a tall lookout tower offering a view over the Black Forest and the plains around Freiburg far below.

We stayed up there for a few hours, photographing the beautiful snow-plastered forest and waiting in the howling winds for what turned out to be an awesome sunset!

:-) Thanks, Jack. Look forward to more adventures from ya. We are having an awesome early snow year here in the Northern Colorado mountains, and am getting out and having fun.

Gorgeous stuff, Jack! It’s cool to see so much great imagery here this winter – we talked to a guy from Freiburg when we were in Norway and he called it the most beautiful city in the world. Of course that sounded like hyperbole, but it looks pretty stunning on your blog. :)

    • Jack Brauer says:

Yes the center of Freiburg is really beautiful, with lots of old Bavarian buildings, cobblestone streets, and of course a huge Gothic cathedral. Most beautiful city in the world?… I hadn’t thought of that… But it is definitely up on the list. :) (After thinking about it, Oslo might get my vote, from the cities I’ve seen… but I’m not much of a connoisseur of cities!)

That is truly one of the most amazing sunset photos I’ve ever seen – the hoarfrost on the trees adds to it. Nice job!

Beautiful photos Jack. I’m glad you are having such a great time in Europe.
Thanks for all the reading and images during the 2010. Hope you have a wonderful 2011 and finally make it to Patagonia again!
Merry Xmas and Happy New Year!

  • Hey Jack!
Leo friend- your photos are just extraordinary, as always! The shot of the sunset over the Black Forest is breathtaking! WOWOWOW!
Thanks for sharing such immense beauty! Happy Holidays to you and all the best in your travels!

    Hey Jack,
I´m an amateur photographer from Karlsruhe, about 100 miles north of Freiburg. I´ve been following your blog & website for quite a while now, because I love to travel around the US and especially the Rockies, and your pictures from there are amazing! It´s quite strange to see your great pictures from the Black Forest, not so far from where I live :-) But you´re in the right place at the right time, we´ve had an incredible winter so far, I´ve never been out photographing so much in winter before! A few days ago I was up on another lookout tower in the Black Forest and photographed a nice sunset as well :-)
So, enjoy your time over here! I´m looking forward to seeing more of your pictures from Europe!
    Björn

Thanks for the note Björn! Yes the Black Forest is so amazing all smothered in snow! I enjoyed browsing your galleries, though I didn’t see any European photos! But it looks like you’ve been all around the states, and have many sweet photos to show for it.
      ~Jack
